Traveling with your pet can offer some challenges. Trips to the beach, pool parties, barbecues or weekend getaways are part of summer breaks. Taking your pet along for the ride can be part of the plan too. Animal Planet and the Humane Society offer some tips to make sure your pet is safe and comfortable on summer trips, whether they are meeting puppy pals in the park or taking a trip to Mexico. Here are some of the items on the checklist provided by Animal Planet:
- Food – Having familiar snacks and meals will help comfort your pet when it is unfamiliar places. It is also not a good idea to introduce your dog to new foods, especially on the road. No need to make your dog sick in the car.
- Water – Bring water from home. Water from new places, especially foreign destinations, can lead to digestive problems and diarrhea. Animal Planet advises to introduce water from new places gradually.
- Blankets – Having a favorite blanket with familiar smells will help make your pet feel comfortable, especially at night. Sleeping in an unfamiliar place can be unsettling. Give your pet a way to relax.
- Pooper scooper and plastic bags – Be prepared to clean up after your dog. No one likes a messy guest.
- Medications – If your dog is sick or taking medication, make sure to bring them with you on trips. Even if you plan on taking a day trip, brings your pet’s meds. You never know if an afternoon outing can turn into a weekend visit.
Animal Planet also has tips for traveling abroad. Some countries require documentation for pets that are traveling. Some countries have quarantine policies for traveling pets. Even some states, like Hawaii, have different laws for pets who are traveling with their owners. Makes sure you know the laws and regulations before planning your trips.
